What is swine flu?
Swine flu is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by the Type A H1N1 Influenza virus. Swine flu can kill people unless properly diagnosed and treated.
How is swine flu transmitted?
- coughing
- sneezing
- touching of mouth or nose after handling infected objects
Can you catch swine flu from eating pork?
No. Eating pork is safe if meat is properly cooked and prepared.
What are the symptoms?
- fever
- coughing
- body aches
- headache
- fatigue
- runny nose
- lack of appetite
- sore throat
- vomiting and diarrhea may also occur
How do I protect myself?
- wash hands with soap and water or alcohol-based hand cleaners
- avoid shaking hands or beso-beso during these times
- avoid contact with people with flu symptoms
If flu symptoms occur:
- isolate yourself from people
- seek immediate medical assistance
