<p>Here is the <strong>Synopsis</strong> of the play:</p>
<blockquote><p>London, 1912. It is a blustery March evening outside Covent Garden, where flower girls are selling bouquets. Dapper young Freddy Eynsford-Hill accidentally bumps into Eliza Doolittle, a Cockney flower merchant, causing her flowers to fall into the mud. As she protests volubly, Professor Henry Higgins, a distinguished phonetician interested in all kinds of dialects, laments that of all nationalities, the English are the ones incapable of speaking their own language correctly. He tells Eliza that he and his newfound friend and fellow phonetician, Colonel Pickering can teach her to speak like a lady. Pickering and Higgins decide to turn this experiment into a bet; to see if they can pass Eliza off as a duchess.</p>
<p>The next day, Eliza appears at Higgins&#8217; home ready to learn, but her Cockney mannerisms and morals become so exasperating that Higgins nearly gives up. She, in turn, is driven to distraction by his thoughtless treatment and incessant instruction. Finally, however, she triumphantly learns correct pronunciation. As one of her lessons, Higgins takes Eliza to the Ascot Races and introduces her to society for the first time. She at once attracts the attentions of Freddy Eynsford-Hill, who follows her home, hoping to see her again. Finally, after months of hard work, she is ready for the big test, and is taken to a splendid ball. While there, she succeeds in brilliantly convincing all that she is a royal duchess.</p>
<p>After the ball, Higgins and Pickering congratulate each other on their technical work, completely forgetting Eliza. Hurt and angry, she rushes out of the house, and runs into Freddy. He professes his love, but she demands that he stop talking about it. When Higgins awakes in the morning he discovers that Eliza is gone, and muses on the frailties of women. Higgins is now haunted by reminders of the way she has changed his life. The musical ends with an encounter between Eliza and Higgins that suggests each has made a lasting impression on the other.</p></blockquote>

Or do you just love poetry?</strong></p>
<p>Here are some useful and helpful writing hints to write more substantive and creative poems.</p>
<blockquote>
<h4><strong>1. Know Your Goal</strong></h4>
<p>If you don&#8217;t know where you&#8217;re going, how can you get there? You need to know what you are trying to accomplish before you begin any project. Writing a poem is no exception. Before you begin, ask yourself what you want your poem to &#8220;do&#8221;. Do you want your poem to to describe an event in your life, protest a social injustice, or describe the beauty of nature? Once your know the goal of your poem, you can conform your writing to that goal. Take each main element in your poem and make it serve the main purpose of the poem.<span id="more-292"></span></p>
<h4><strong>2. Use Images</strong></h4>
<p>&#8220;BE A PAINTER IN WORDS,&#8221; says UWEC English professor emerita, poet, and song writer Peg Lauber. She says poetry should stimulate six senses: <strong>sight, </strong><strong>hearing, </strong><strong>smell,</strong><strong>touch, </strong><strong>taste and </strong><strong>kinesiology</strong> (motion).</p>
<h4><strong>3. Avoid Clichés</strong></h4>
<p>Stephen Minot defines a cliché as: &#8220;A metaphor or simile that has become so familiar from overuse that the vehicle&#8230;.no longer contributes any meaning whatever to the tenor. It provides neither the vividness of a fresh metaphor nor the strength of a single unmodified word…The word is also used to describe overused but nonmetaphorical expressions such as &#8216;tried and true&#8217; and &#8216;each and every&#8221; Three Genres: The Writing of Poetry, Fiction and Drama, 405).<br style="padding: 0px; margin: 0px;" /><br style="padding: 0px; margin: 0px;" /><em>Cliché</em> also describes other overused literary elements. &#8220;Familiar plot patterns and stock characters are clichés on a big scale&#8221; (Minot 148). Clichés can be overused themes, character types, or plots. For example, the &#8220;Lone Ranger&#8221; cowboy is a cliché because it has been used so many times that people no longer find it original.<br style="padding: 0px; margin: 0px;" /><br style="padding: 0px; margin: 0px;" />A work full of clichés is like a plate of old food: unappetizing.<br style="padding: 0px; margin: 0px;" /><br style="padding: 0px; margin: 0px;" />Clichés work against original communication. People value creative talent. They want to see work that rises above the norm. When they see a work without clichés, they know the writer has worked his or her tail off, doing whatever it takes to be original. When they see a work full to the brim with clichés, they feel that the writer is not showing them anything above the ordinary. (In case you hadn&#8217;t noticed, this paragraph is chock full of clichés&#8230; I&#8217;ll bet you were bored to tears.)<br style="padding: 0px; margin: 0px;" /><br style="padding: 0px; margin: 0px;" />Clichés dull meaning. Because clichéd writing sounds so familiar, people can complete finish whole lines without even reading them. If they don&#8217;t bother to read your poem, they certainly won&#8217;t stop to think about it. If they do not stop to think about your poem, they will never encounter the deeper meanings that mark the work of an accomplished poet.</p>
<h4><strong>4. Avoid Sentimentality</strong></h4>
<p>Sentimentality is &#8220;dominated by a blunt appeal to the emotions of pity and love&#8230;Popular subjects are puppies, grandparents, and young lovers&#8221; (Minot 416). &#8220;When readers have the feeling that emotions like rage or indignation have been pushed artificially for their own sake, they will not take the poem seriously&#8221; (132).<br style="padding: 0px; margin: 0px;" /><br style="padding: 0px; margin: 0px;" />Minot says that the problem with sentimentality is that it detracts from the literary quality of your work (416). If your poetry is mushy or teary-eyed, your readers may openly rebel against your effort to invoke emotional response in them. If that happens, they will stop thinking about the issues you want to raise, and will instead spend their energy trying to control their own gag reflex.</p>
<h4><strong>5. Communicate theme</strong></h4>
<p>Poetry always has a theme. Theme is not just a topic, but an idea with an opinion.<br style="padding: 0px; margin: 0px;" /><br style="padding: 0px; margin: 0px;" /><strong>Topic:</strong> &#8220;The Vietnam War&#8221;<br style="padding: 0px; margin: 0px;" /><br style="padding: 0px; margin: 0px;" />This is not a theme. It is only a subject. It is just an event. There are no ideas, opinions, or statements about life or of wisdom contained in this sentence.<br style="padding: 0px; margin: 0px;" /><br style="padding: 0px; margin: 0px;" /><strong>Theme:</strong> &#8220;History shows that despite our claims to be peace-loving, unfortunately each person secretly dreams of gaining glory through conflict.&#8221; <br style="padding: 0px; margin: 0px;" /><br style="padding: 0px; margin: 0px;" />This is a theme. It is not just an event, but a statement about an event. It shows what the poet thinks about the event. The poet strives to show the reader his/her theme during the entire poem, making use of literary techniques.</p></blockquote>

<blockquote><p>HIGH school students across the country might be able to learn Spanish in their schools, if plans for the integration of the language in the curriculum push through, said an education official Saturday.</p>
<p>“We hope that it will start next school year,” said Department of Education (DepEd) 7 Director Recaredo Borgonia.<br />
Interested high school students will be allowed to pick Spanish as an elective course in their secondary studies. However, only those that perform well in class will be allowed to take the elective.</p>
<p><strong>Requirement</strong></p>
<p>“We cannot make it a requirement for all the students to take up Spanish. If the student doesn’t perform well in English or Filipino, you can’t expect them to do well in Spanish. So it is better that it just an elective, for the students to decide,” said Borgonia.</p>
<p>However, plans for the integration of the Spanish language in the curriculum are still in the early stages, he said.</p>
<p>“We are still preparing for it. Nothing has been made clear. Right now, we still need a task force that will draw up plans to have Spanish taught as an elective (subject) in secondary schools across the country,” he said.</p>
<p>An earlier DepEd memorandum called for the integration of Spanish in the curriculum for the current school year. However nobody took charge of the program.</p>
<p>Borgonia said they were hoping to fully implement the endeavor this time around.</p>
<p>“It will be done on a pilot basis. Not all schools will immediately implement it. It will be one school per region at first,” he said.<br />
In order to effectively teach Spanish, public school teachers will be taught by Spanish teachers.</p>
<p>“Through that, we will have teachers who have the competencies to speak and teach Spanish. By effectively teaching students Spanish, teachers will be able to help students get a sense of history,” Borgonia said.</p>
<p>“The students get a good sense of history. And also, by learning Spanish, it is a good tool for industry and business for the students in the future,” he added. <span style="font-weight:bold;"><br />

<p>Our professor have told us that Spanish subject before has 24 units, but based in our curriculum in this generation, we only have 3 units.</p>
<p>And now, they&#8217;re trying to bring Spanish subject back, not just in universities but also in high schools. What for? They say Spanish is also a really useful language because when you go abroad most of the people also knows how to speak the language, most commonly in Europe.</p>
