We all know that education is a fundamental human right: Every child is entitled to it. It is critical to our development as individuals and as societies, and it helps pave the way to a successful and productive future. When we ensure that children have access to a rights-based, quality education that is rooted in gender equality, we create a ripple effect of opportunity that impacts generations to come.

The Knowledge Channel Foundation believes in equal education for all. As they continue to teach and reach more through educational television and online learning, they will be having their 1st-of -a-kind event this coming February 17th at the Rockwell Tent, Makati City which is “Lead the Change 2010“. In this event, there will be exchanging of ideas about discussion in actions on how to move our country forward. There are influential people that best knows these things and will share their respective stands on how to take action and lead the change today.

We are currently facing extreme challenges in health, population, governance, peace, environment and most importantly education, so Lead the Change is the perfect time to speak your mind, listen hard, and commit to act. It basically enables a multi-sectoral collaboration on how best to move Philippines forward.

They have their guest of honor in the event, Dr. Peggy Dulany Rockefeller, founder of the Global Philanthropists Circle and Synergos Institute – an independent non-profit organization that basically aims to solve poverty and Oscar M. Lopez, Chair of the Lopez Group of Companies and Chair of the Knowledge Channel Foundation is expected to deliver an inspirational message.

Now here’s an idea of how much would it cost to encourage the public to donate or support and connect a public school to Knowledge Channel:

Cable-A-School Sponsorship:

approximately P100,000 per public school for cable-able schools
approximately P150,000 per public school for remote schools with satellite dishes

These sponsorships to provide Knowledge Channel to public schools are inclusive of the following:
- a 29″ TV set
- a satellite dish and digital receiver for remote schools
- support services: teacher and adminstrators training workshop-seminars on “TV-Assisted Instruction”, semestral Knowledge Channel Program guides, regular monitoring

Sponsor a Program:

approximately P350,000* per 20-minute TV episode and online learning materials

Here is the Synopsis of the play:

London, 1912. It is a blustery March evening outside Covent Garden, where flower girls are selling bouquets. Dapper young Freddy Eynsford-Hill accidentally bumps into Eliza Doolittle, a Cockney flower merchant, causing her flowers to fall into the mud. As she protests volubly, Professor Henry Higgins, a distinguished phonetician interested in all kinds of dialects, laments that of all nationalities, the English are the ones incapable of speaking their own language correctly. He tells Eliza that he and his newfound friend and fellow phonetician, Colonel Pickering can teach her to speak like a lady. Pickering and Higgins decide to turn this experiment into a bet; to see if they can pass Eliza off as a duchess.

The next day, Eliza appears at Higgins’ home ready to learn, but her Cockney mannerisms and morals become so exasperating that Higgins nearly gives up. She, in turn, is driven to distraction by his thoughtless treatment and incessant instruction. Finally, however, she triumphantly learns correct pronunciation. As one of her lessons, Higgins takes Eliza to the Ascot Races and introduces her to society for the first time. She at once attracts the attentions of Freddy Eynsford-Hill, who follows her home, hoping to see her again. Finally, after months of hard work, she is ready for the big test, and is taken to a splendid ball. While there, she succeeds in brilliantly convincing all that she is a royal duchess.

After the ball, Higgins and Pickering congratulate each other on their technical work, completely forgetting Eliza. Hurt and angry, she rushes out of the house, and runs into Freddy. He professes his love, but she demands that he stop talking about it. When Higgins awakes in the morning he discovers that Eliza is gone, and muses on the frailties of women. Higgins is now haunted by reminders of the way she has changed his life. The musical ends with an encounter between Eliza and Higgins that suggests each has made a lasting impression on the other.

See you there!

Prepared By: Mrs. Emeline C. Baco
Chief Librarian

The Library of the new CDU building is strategically situated on the second floor. It is well designed to meet the standards of a university. Its floor area is three times the size of the Library in previous location. With a seating capacity of about 1000, the Library is made more conducive to learning and research. It has several new salient features like the Discussion rooms, Chat rooms where students can make or take calls through their cellular phones, Conference room which also serves as a Faculty Reading Area when there is no scheduled meeting or other activities, Laptop Charging Area where students can recharge their laptops for free and a Perk Corner where students can take a short break for a cup of coffee and light refreshments.

Another salient feature, which is unique in our university, is the Book Drop. It is provided to facilitate book returns. Students could still return their borrowed books even if the Library is already closed. With this, students have no excuse why they could not return their books on time.

The most recent development of the Library is availability of the Online Public Access Catalog, which was launched on November 24, 2007, during the celebration of the 75th National Book Week. With 6 terminals, searching for books and other materials is now just a click of a finger.

The library is also happy to announce the addition of a new database. Effective January 2008, the administration approved our request to subscribe to the Proquest Health Management Database in addition to our existing subscription to the Proquest Health and Medical Complete Database. We do encourage students and faculty to maximize the use of our materials. These databases are really useful especially to those who are involved in research.

More developments are considered to be made available in the future like the automated circulation to facilitate returning and borrowing of library materials. Provision of Wi-Fi is also being considered.

With all these new features and services, we can proudly say that the Library is already at par with the Libraries in other big universities.

The first one to compete was the High School Level. And the schools which participated were CIT, UC, USJ-R, CEC, and SWU. The competition then started.

The mechanics of the competition was then read. There were three categories: Easy, Moderate, and Difiicult. Each category has 10 questions. The Easy part has only 1 point, the Moderate has 2 points, and the Difficult has 3 points. The perfect score would be 60.

The participants were then called to their respective places for the competition. They were provided with illustration boards and chalks to write their answers on. The questions were made in a powerpoint presentation. And to our surprise, there were some clerical errors. But then, it still ended well for the High School Level.

The Result:

School-Total Score-Rank

CIT-33-2nd
UC-40-1st

For the College Level, there is the same mechanics of the competition that of the High School Level. The schools which participated in the College level were CIT, UV, CDU, USC, UC, USJ-R, VC, and SWU.

At first, the competition was going smoothly. Again, there were still some clerical errors. But who would have thought that a misunderstanding could occur between the coaches and the Dean? Whew. But it was then resolved after they argued for how many minutes about the mechanics.

After computing for the scores, the result was: CIT= 34, CDU=34, and UC=34. So the three of them have the same scores. There should be clinchers to determine which will be the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. The Dean herself read the questions.

But then again, UC won!

The Result:
