In two years, blogging in Cebu has ripened from just being a mere online diary to something that takes an active role in civic and social awareness.

One of the factors that contributed to this positive development in the blogging scene in Cebu is the creation of a local blogging community.

The Cebu Bloggers Society was founded on February 14, 2008, with the main goal of uniting Cebu-based bloggers into a well-bonded community. And indeed, after its creation, individuals with diverse backgrounds but with a common interest, which is to promote Cebu and advocate blogging as a key tool for progress, converged together to establish Cebu’s first and largest blogging community.

The Cebu Bloggers Society has really grown and evolved quite significantly. From its humble beginnings, the group presently has at least 80 members and still counting. And now, the group is already anticipating its 2nd founding anniversary! Dubbed as “CBS @ 2: The Cebu Bloggers Society 2nd Anniversary Celebration”, the event is envisioned to further strengthen the bond of friendship and camaraderie within the blogging community.

The anniversary celebration will be held on Sunday, February 14, 2010, 5-9PM, at SM City Cebu Foodcourt – SM Storyland Celebration Hall.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY and HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY!!!

The first part of the program was the Presentation of PoliticalArena.com v2.0 by Racquel Cagurangan, General Manager of PoliticalArena.com.

Politicalarena.com is the country’s first socio-political networking site, developed to promote awareness and interactivity in the local political scene. It provides users with a common platform to access information about candidates and, at the same time, offers candidates with a venue to disseminate information to the public, real time.

Just like any other networking site, politicalarena.com encourages visitors to register and voice out their concerns, express their views, interact with candidates and learn more about Philippine politics. They could also post photos, upload videos and share their views through blogging, asking questions and posting testimonials.

Taking the May election and Social Networking to the next level

Major changes have been introduced to politicalarena.com, the most notable one being the reduction from 22 ‘perceived’ presidential candidates featured on site down to the 10 official presidential candidates.

The site also now includes not just the presidential candidates but their running mates and the whole senatorial slate. This will provide users with access to majority of the candidates running for national seats.

While politicalarena.com introduced a lot modifications to better cater to its member’s needs, some features still remain the same. Users can still upload and view photos and videos in the Photos and Videos section of the site. The Forum which encourages healthy discussions on everything related to politics ad the Philippines is still s great venue for site members to gather and discuss. The News, Announcements and Calendar sections of the site still continue to relay important information on current events and other campaign activities.

What’s new?

Politicalarena.com promises a lot more for its browsers and members as it takes social networking and 2010 elections to the next level – with more exciting and interactive features – for a more informed and intelligent electorate.

Official Candidate List

After COMELEC’s recent declaration of official candidates, the website has included the complete list of candidates for the national positions, together with their respective profiles.

Now, have you ever wondered how this new voting system works?

Another part of the program was the Demonstration of the PCOS Machine Testing conducted by Miguel Avila, Smartmatic-TIM.

Now here’s the step by step tutorial of how this new voting system works:

Step 1

Fill up your ballot bu shading in the ovals next to the names of the candidates you want to vote for.

Some position will require you to choose more than one candidate, so read the instructions carefully!

NOTE: DO NOT OVER-VOTE! If you vote for more than the maximum number allowed, your votes for that position will NOT BE COUNTED.

Step 2

Insert your ballot into the counting machine. It doesn’t matter if you insert the ballot bottom first or upside down.

Step 3

At the end of the process, the voting machine will count all the votes cast and produce thirty copies of the election returns.

It’s that simple. Now, are you ready to cast your vote?

As far as I can remember, I’ve been to Maribago Bluewater three times already last year. Wow, those moments were just amazing. I can still remember our first time when 30 bloggers (mostly Cebu Bloggers Society members)  were invited to tour around on that one summer day. I was pretty much astonished when I saw the place.

Sumilon Bluewater Island Resort is located on tranquil Sumilon Island. The Island remains as one of Cebu’s best kept secrets and is found on the southeastern tip of the mainland. It is 125 kilometers from Cebu City and is in close proximity to Dumaguete. The island has an area of 24 hectares and is surrounded by crystal clear waters with varying aquamarine hues. It is the first marine protected area in the Philippines and was made a fish sanctuary in 1974 under the guidance of Siliman University Marine Reserve. During dives, one will find varied marine species and even occasional sightings of black tip sharks. Pristine white sand beaches are situated in different areas in Sumilon.

Its Sandbar is well known for its changing shapes and shifting locations around the island, depending on the season. On the island, there is a natural lagoon teeming with high mangroves. There are also natural caves where fishermen used to seek refuge. On the southside, a lighthouse rests on a protected tree park. Beside it is a “Baluarte”, a historical watchtower built as part of a warning system to thwart slavers and marauders in the 19th century.

Wow. Those Islands surely bring out the best accommodations ever. Now my next island destination is the Panglao Bluewater Island Resort. I’ve always wanted to go to Bohol but still I’ve never been there, so I really hope I could go there this year. And hopefully, I’d be able to stay at the bluewater resort.

As I say goodbye to the year 2009, I would like to thank the people who touched my heart, made my 2009 a very memorable one and became part of my life. To start with, I  thank the Cebu Bloggers Society for making me  a part of the group. We were not just a group, but we also became family. Since February 15th, when I officially became a CBS member, my life has become more colorful and full of surprises. I experienced a lot that I never expected to experience. Thank you so much guys for giving me that wonderful opportunity. We did great the previous year, I know we can do it again this year or even better. Kudos to us this year!

I would also like to thank my dutymates/ researchmates, for doing their best to pass our Research subject and doing good in both the clinical and community duties. Though I know that was tough, we still manage to surpass all of them. As this year starts, we still have a lot of challenges to face and even tougher than before. But I know we can do better this year. We will pass and we will GRADUATE! May the Lord God bless us and guide us all the way. Again, thank you for doing a job well done.

For my classmates, we have been together for 4 years already. I thank you all for the never ending laughs, all of the “kabuangs”,  support and company throughout the years though I know it will end this year. But still, I know it doesn’t end here. Though we will part our ways soon, I know we will meet again soon. I am very thankful to belong in section B. And I am proud to call you my classmates. We can do this guys! This year is the toughest year for us but I know we will graduate, pass the board exam and become REGISTERED NURSES!

And lastly, I would like to thank my family and friends especially my mom whom I owe my life to. For the never ending love, concern, understanding, and support. Though you have suffered a lot the previous year, you were able to stand again on your own feet. I am very proud of you mom and I love you. To my hardworking dad, who is very far away from me ever since, I thank you so much for the financial support, concern, and love you’ve given me. Though you’re far away, I just want you to know that I miss you and I love you. To my grandparents, thank you Lolo Wences and Lola Elen for taking care of me when mom is not around. For Lolo’s jokes and Lola’s teachings. I love you both. I would also like to thank my cousins, Aunts and Uncles for all their love and concern. Thank you so much. I love my family. May we continue to love each other this year and hope to see you all soon. I miss you all!

And to all my friends, THANK YOU. There were many instances in my previous year when I thought I can’t make it, but you were there to comfort me and cheer me up.Thank you so muc h guys.

Enough with the thank you’s and WELCOME 2010! I can tell that this year will be a great year for me. Not just because I read it in my horoscope but I can feel it. I did good last year, I can do it better this year. I’m now ready to face the challenges ahead of me. And yes, I have my new year’s resolutions. I just hope I’d be able to make all these possible.

CHEERS TO 2010!!!

Here are the different diners at SM City Cebu Foodcourt with their brief histories:

GOLDEN BOWL DIMSUM

Golden Bowl Dimsum Express started our by an invitation from an SM Foodcourt tenant friend way back in 1997. It was the first Dimsum in a Foodcourt in Cebu. The name Golden Bowl Dimsum, at that time, came from the existing restaurant business, Golden Bowl City Dimsum Restaurant, “Bowl” for the smaller store, “City” for the big one.

Golden Bowl Dimsum Express offers different variety of traditional Hongkong style Dimsum and other Chinese cuisine. Their Steam Rice is known to most Chinese community as the original and the best tasting Steam Rice in Cebu. Steam Rice is originated here in Cebu. It was created by a Hongkong chef, Chi Keung Leung. It was created only by accident, the oven for baking was out of order and chef was forced to create a new dish to replace unavailable menus.

Steam Rice was and still a hit to the Cebuano Market.

RIC’S BARBECUE

After 15 years of operations in SM Foodcourt, Ric’s Barbecue owner Jingle Benitez-Polotan knows by heart the ingredients for a successful restaurant.

“It’s our food. I know that if your food is good, people will always come back for more even if there are a lot of restaurants around you.” says Benitez-Polotan, before adding “It’s the service also” that matters most to our customers.

Benitez-Polotan knows fully well that this formula works.

Ric’s Barbecue, an unassuming diner located at SM city Cebu’s Foodcourt, sfter all is turning 15 years, a pioneer at the mall which also celebrates its anniversary every November 27th. Over the years, this restaurant manages to stay ahead becuase it serves tasty Filipino favorites such as pochero and barbecue.

She also has SM City Cebu to thank: “It’s good business. We’re happy with SM, how they take care of us. Plus, it can really draw a crowd especially the foodcourt. It’s interesting because the people dining here really have th money to eat as much as they want.”

ISLAND GRILL EXPRESS

Island Grill Express opened its first outlet fifteen years ago at the SM City Cebu Foodcourt. It specializes in Ilonggo and Cebuano dishes with its “siunugba” or grilled meat and seafood as constant bestsellers. Other favorites are their crab relleno, camaron rebosado, tinolang isda, pinangat and La Paz Batchoy.

They are proud to say that they have been constantly in the number one slot in terms of sale. Island Grill Express presently has two outlets in Cebu and three franchised outlets in Davao and soon in General Santos City.

VENETIAN COFFEE BREAK & DESSERTS

Venetian coffee started on October 16, 1998 as a coffee cart at the SM Foodcourt in SM City Cebu following the Italian concept of “coffee-to-go”.

With its growing number of patrons, Venetian Coffee expanded from a small cart to a coffee shop; this time associating its brand with the businessmen & entrepreneur clientele.

Venetian Coffee became a place for business meetings with its wide array of coffee blends and pastries.

On December 11, 1999, Venetian Coffee opened its 2nd coffee shop at the 3rd level of the same mall.

FOUNTAINHEAD

Fountainhead Bakeshop started as Linda’s Bakeshop in the early 70’s and evolved from a home based business to what it is now; an institution of 31 years.

From delicate sponge cakes, to chiffon and chocolate cakes, the bakeshop grew under the enthusiasm of Mrs. Erlinda Francisco who specialized greatly in large tiered cakes for all occasions and home made baked goodies like ensaymadas, leche flans, well-loved brazo de Mercedes and the like…

When the first store was birthed in Manalili St., Cebu City, the flag bearer, Fountainhead Tasty Bread came into being as well. This gread joined the elite force of great tasting cakes and with many other new concoctions, which now contribute to the Fountainhead we all know now. They have many stand-out delicacies from bread, cakes, and pastries enough to wow the customers.

MAMA GIE

Started in 1980 managed and operated by spouses Alfredo E. Costales (deceased) and Virginia P. Costales. The name “MAMA GIE” wa derived from Virgnia’s nickname Virgie or Gie for short and was widely known to friends and peers as “MAMA GIE”.

By July of 1994, the name of the company was called MAMA GIE CORPORATION.

The same year 1994, MAMA GIE Corporation was offered aspace at SM City Cebu Foodcourt. MAMA GIE’s concept of Kapampangan foods was approved. Setting up of a foodstall in SM Foodcourt was a brilliant and wise move of MAMA GIE to corner the market. Indeed, MAMA GIE ranks no. 1 in terms of SALES at SM City Cebu Foodcourt since the 2nd quarter of 1998. The reason for its success, “good food, fast service and quality not to be compromised” is the philosophy they have instituted among their works. The top favorites are Boneless Bangus, Lechon Kawali as well as other top seller menu items.

FISHPORT GRILL

Fish Port Grill Express opened last July 26 of 2009 at SM Foodcourt, SM City Cebu. Fish Port Grill is a seafood fastfood restaurant where they serve mainly tuna dishes. They serve tuna in different ways but they are known for their grilled tuna belly, panga, and tuna bicol express.

Their Grilled Tuna Belly is served with achara. It is marinated for a few hours. Then the tuna belly is grilled and glazed with their special marinade which makes it taste juicy and mouth watering.

For spicy lovers, it is recommended to taste their Tuna Bicol Express. Tuna Bicol Express is served with coconut cream and season with salt and pepper. Minced siling labuyo and spada to make the tuna spicy.

They may be new in the food industry but if you are looking for delicious and inexpensive meal, go to Fishport Grill Express, savor and experience the taste that is distinctively different from the rest!

FIESTA CEBUANA

From the picture of 1st time tourists in search of a place to eat in a 1st time island, Fiesta! Cebuana was born in December 2005. Fiesta! Cebuana serves fine celebration food called from an heirloom of recipes passed on to one of its owners from a great grandmother. Fiesta! Cebuana is happy food, a modest expression of Cebu island happiness. 365 days in a year, one could partake in a true island feast in 365 different ways. Fiesta! Cebuana is love, protected from  generation to generation, as a priceless heritage from the past.

KING WAH CHINESE CUISINE

Travel is always the best way to experience culinary diversity and Mrs. Evelyn Lim can personally attest to this. Her travels to China, Hong Kong and to other countries allowed her to savor the different dishes each country had to offer. Enlightened on the joys one can get from gastronomic delights, she was then inspired to share the wonderful experience to the Cebuano people.

Wanting her dream to become reality, she opened King Wah Chinese Cuisine. Established on May of 1994 at the SM City Cebu Foodcourt, King Wah Chinese Cuisine made sure that it can provide the best dishes at affordable prices garnished with impeccable customer sevice.

Through this delightful food house, Mrs. Evelyn Lim made good with her promise to serve the patrons with authentic Asian dishes that was not only unique but also quite delightful to the palates of Filipinos as it combined the savory taste of Filipino cooking with that of the sophistication of Chinese cuisine.

King Wah Chinese Cuisine will always stand to its vision of serving the people with hot, fast, affordable and exquisite Chinese-Filipino dishes.

SMOKEY’S

Smokey’s was conceived and developed by Pure Foods Corp. in 1982. It specializes in hotdog based food products. The first Smokey’s outlet was opened at the Quad Carpark in Makati City in November, 1982. Provincial expansion began in 1989. To date Smokey’s can be seen in every conceivable corner in the Phils. Especially in malls, schools, hospitals, etc. In the year 2002, Smokey’s is now part of San Miguel Pure Foods Corp.

Smokey’s SM Foodcourt opens together with the opening of SM City Cebu in 1993. Over the years, it has delighted customers at SM Foodcourt, SM City Cebu with its plain hotdog sandwiches an hotdog combinations. A trip to SM Foodcourt is not ocmplete without Smokey’s.

Yummy huh? But unfortunately I wasn’t able to taste those foods except for the Black Forest cake from Fountainhead because I was already full beforehand. So there, it was like we’re having a feast in the SM City Cebu Foodcourt.

Other highlights of the event include the live blogging contest which is to blog about the event. The hosts of the event would be the judge and the fortunate winner of the contest was Michael Sinjin Pineda of the Cebu Bloggers Society. After the contest was the distribution of certificates plus a gift pack from Del Monte to each of the bloggers who joined the event. Of course, I received mine. Thank you so much.

Last November 9, 2009 we have remembered our great friend’s/brother’s/father’s Special Day. He have been so kind and true to us from the very start. He brought laughter and joy to each and everyone of us.  We have been so blessed for having him in our lives. He is non other than Atty. Ethelbert Ouano.

Let us just consider this post as my post birthday message to him:

Yesterday, he gave us a belated birthday treat to remember. We, the Cebu Bloggers Society, have been invited to celebrate his special day in a small resto called Cream and Bake located somewhere in Mandaue City, Cebu. Even a small resto could fit the large number of CBS folks. The room was filled with many Christmas decors along with their specialty which were the cakes on display. A long table was placed in the center of the room for us. Much to our surprise, they don’t just serve desserts but they also serve the main courses. All of their dishes were superb.

After our sumptuous dinner, we then headed to Cafe Shang to continue our celebration, around 100 meters far from Cream and Bake. Cafe Shang has a videoke spot so once we got there, all of us were ready with our song numbers. It was our 2nd time in the place. The 1st was after the PBA night. Then, soft liquors were served particularly San Miguel Beer Light and Red Horse. Also, a bottle of Tequila was passed around by Beejing. We totally enjoyed our night until 1:00AM. After which, we went home thanking Atty. Ethelbert for his unforgettable birthday treat.

The Maribago Bluewater located in Lapu-lapu City, Cebu have invited 5 members of the Cebu Bloggers Society to the launching of their bluewatergallery with the back-to-back exhibit of Mr. Jet Florendo and Mr. Boy Kiamko last October 14, 2009. Thanks to Mr. Ruben Licera of PINOYWORLD for inviting us. The 5 CBS bloggers who attended the event were Mikyu, Bryan, Jorich, Atty. Ethelbert, and me.

The tandem is inevitable.

After more than 3 decades of established bond as brothers, two of Cebu’s respected homegrown artists share the limelight in an exhibit dubbed “DUAL EXPOSURE” at the Bluewater Gallery which opened last October 14, 2009.

Jet Florendo celebrates his 35th year as a seasoned sculptor with more than two thousand artworks, 35 exhibits and counting.

Boy Kiamko on the other hand traced his beginnings as a realist and an adept in landscape painter in the early 70’s with 22 one-man exhibits, half a dozen international exposures and a solid thousand artworks in circulation in 4 continents.

Both lover of life, Jet and Boy met in the early 70’s. They took art appreciation in the streets of Cebu in 1978 and presented to the public the progressive form of their works attesting to their continued devotion to the chosen vocation.

THE ARTIST

Florendo is credited as among the most influential artist famous for his sculpture with curvaceous forms. His strength is in his ability to expose the soul of each wood piece. On the other hand, Kiamko’s legacy is his progressive pendulum effect of his paintings.

Kiamko attests, “God gave us talent to nurture, nature for inspiration, and man for encouragement”.

THE EXHIBIT

As their first back-to-back exhibit, both artists will showcase new visual artworks and the complement Florendo’s sculpture stands for every Kiamko paintings hanged.

THE GALLERY

BLUEWATER GALLERY is the only premier resort art gallery in Cebu and the home to more than 16 art exhibits of more than 25 Filipino artists.

After a week of having trouble with my internet connection and having busy doing school works, here I am again. It feels great to be back and blog again! Hurray to me!

Last October 10, 2009 was the NESCAFÉ 3in1 Soundskool 2009 Eliminations (Visayas) held in Parkmall, Mandaue City, Cebu. I had the chance to be with my CBS family again. I totally missed them like I haven’t seen them for ages.  The Cebu Bloggers Society (CBS) was given this opportunity to be the media partner of the event, so we came as the Press media. Pretty cool huh? Well as for me, I went there only to have the orientation to our new CBS members because I was still supposed to attend a birthday party but eventually the night was getting older and I felt like I can’t leave the occasion so I just better stay to where I was seated (with the crowd facing the stage with the different college bands performing).

What was the NESCAFÉ 3in1 Soundskool was all about really? Let me give you a brief description of what NESCAFÉ 3in1 Soundskool was all about in case you do not happen to know what it is:

NESCAFÉ 3in1 Soundskool is an inter-collegiate competition open to young, unsigned bands in the Philippines. From its beginnings as a battle among student bands in the Greater Manila Area in 2005, the competition has become of the country’s most anticipated music events. NESCAFÉ 3in1 Soundskool has produced some of the Philippines hottest young bands, including Hilera and Letter Day Story.

This year, NESCAFÉ 3in1 Soundskool is widening its reach to around 400 colleges and universities nationwide. NESCAFÉ 3in1 Soundskool sets itself apart from other music competitions because it not only makes participants experience fame — it also provides opportunities that help young artists build on their craft to become better overall performers.

The most awaited moment which made me decide not to leave the event was the part where the 6 Cycle Mind jammed with the crowd. I did not expect to have right in front of me so closely Rhoneil “Ney” Dimaculangan-the lead vocalist of the latter band. That was just so amazing. Everybody enjoyed their music. But before their turn, the previous band which they call the Letter Day Story played also a couple of songs. At first I thought they were also part of the competition, but they turned out to be the NESCAFÉ 3in1 Soundskool 2008 Champ! No wonder they got pretty cool songs which Dex Yu- the lead vocalist have composed primarily. We had the chance to interview them after the event and they were so friendly. They have answered all our questions.
